A Downtown Cleveland Engagement Session with Christen + Greg
Christen had a vision for her and Greg’s engagement photos from the very beginning.
She wanted the character of downtown Cleveland. Historic buildings. Beautiful old architecture. Photos that felt like they belonged in the city rather than simply using Cleveland as a backdrop.
But there was one other thing on their must-have list: rooftop engagement photos with the Cleveland skyline behind them.
And somehow, we found a spot that gave us the best of both.
Engagement Photos in Downtown Cleveland
We met outside the Cleveland Public Library, after parking nearby on level five of the parking garage.
From there, we simply started walking.
One of my favorite things about photographing engagement sessions downtown is that you really do not need to overcomplicate them. A beautiful building, a city sidewalk, interesting light, and a couple willing to trust the process can give us plenty to work with.
Christen especially loved the older architecture throughout Cleveland, so we made that an intentional part of their session. The historic buildings surrounding the library gave us exactly the look she had envisioned.
We walked, took photos, laughed, and probably spent just as much time chatting about life and wedding plans as we did actually posing for photos.
Which, in my opinion, is exactly how an engagement session should feel.
Talking Wedding Plans Along the Way
Christen and Greg are planning a January wedding at The Onesto in downtown Canton, and I loved getting to hear more about what they have planned while we wandered around Cleveland.
Engagement sessions give us something a wedding day simply cannot: time without a timeline breathing down our necks.
There is no coordinator waiting for us. No guests wondering when cocktail hour starts. No bridal party that needs to be rounded up.
It gives my couples a chance to get comfortable in front of my camera, learn how I direct and pose, and realize that having your photo taken can actually be fun. If you’re planning your own session, I’ve put together some of my favorite engagement session tips to help you know what to expect and make the most of our time together.
By the time the wedding arrives, none of this feels new anymore.
Cleveland Skyline Engagement Photos
About halfway through their session, it was time for the second half of Christen and Greg’s vision.
We headed back to the parking garage and made our way to the rooftop.
Suddenly, the historic architecture and street-level city feel we had been photographing gave way to a completely different view of Cleveland.
Open sky. City buildings. The Cleveland skyline stretching out behind them.
It was exactly the contrast Christen had hoped for when she started planning their engagement photos.
And that is one of the reasons I love when couples come to me with a vision.
You do not need to know the exact street corner. You do not need to scout parking garages or figure out where the light will be best. Tell me what you want your photos to feel like, what you are drawn to, and what matters to you.
Then let me figure out how we make it happen.
Planning Your Own Downtown Cleveland Engagement Session?
Downtown Cleveland gives us so much variety without having to travel all over the city. Historic architecture, busy sidewalks, quieter corners, rooftops, skyline views and completely different looks can all exist within a few blocks of each other.
If you are drawn to engagement photos that feel polished without feeling overly posed, the city makes a beautiful backdrop. As a Cleveland wedding photographer, I love helping couples choose locations that give them variety while still feeling like them.
And your engagement session is about more than creating photos for your save-the-dates.
It is our chance to spend time together before the wedding, get you comfortable in front of my camera, and make wedding-day portraits feel like something you’ve already done before.
Christen and Greg, I cannot wait to trade the Cleveland skyline for downtown Canton when we celebrate with you at The Onesto this January.
