Black and Gold…EVERYWHERE! A sea of Terrible Towels waving in the air. Star Athletes within reach! Jerome “The Bus” Bettis – #36, running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers for 10 years, inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. And I was there to see it happen!! Franco Harris, the runnningback for the Steelers during the 70s was 10 feet from me. At one point, I could had reached out and TOUCHED him!
If you don’t know me very well, here’s a little back story to help better understand the story.
I’m orginally from PA. My mom’s side – HUGE football fans. Weekends were dedicated to Football. Football and Family. I grew up waving my Terrible Towel and listening to Myron Cope on the radio when my Grandmother got tired of listening to “those horrible annoucers who don’t have a clue what’s happening in front of them”. I can remember countless Sundays screaming at the TV “GIVE IT TO THE BUS!!!!!” I know football thanks to my Kuhs family! I speak football thanks to my Uncle.
In the late Winter when the annoucement came who the class of 2015 was, I immeditaly tagged my Uncle, Grandmother, and Godmother (who lives in a subarb of Pittsburgh – you can only imagine what a diehard she is!) and said “Roadtrip, anyone?!” There’s many advantages to Josh and I’s home, but two of the big ones this weekend was being 10 minutes from the Football Hall of Fame, and having a big enough house that we can host for a weekend.
We sat through 7 speeches, one by Tim Brown who had the longest speech in Induction history. I can promise you that all 20,000, give or take a handfull, Steeler Fans in attendence were moaning and groaning after 15 minutes. We came to see the BUS! WE WANTED THE BUS!
And then FINALLY! Chris Berman gets on stage and the crowd is going nuts! Terrible Towels are swinging through the air. “Here we go Steelers, here we go” chants are filling Tim Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. Finally the moment 98% of those in attendence have come to see. There’s a reason Bettis went last… If the big guy was first, or somewhere in the middle, anywhere but last, the Stadium would had slowly filtered out before the end of the evening.
I’m so thankful for this oppertunity to share these memories with my Family. It was definitely worth the three and half hour wait to see a man who I loved watching every Sunday make the final bus stop in Canton Ohio, at the Football Hall of Fame. What an amazing weekend it was! Congratulations, Jerome! Just adding another greet Steeler to the Hall.
