The Top 7 Most Annoying Questions Asked After Announcing Your Engagement

YAY!  YOU’RE ENGAGED! (MAYBE…)

We’re three-quarters of the way through the busiest part of engagement season.  Chances are if you’re reading this blog post it’s because you’ve been there already.  Someone has already asked you at least TWO of the most annoying questions after announcing your new engagement!

If you’re married and reading this, it’s because you were seeking a good laugh, and wanted to read a blog post that you could shake your head in agreement with and say “Right on girl!  I heard that one too many times!”

If you’re neither married nor engaged, just wait, your day is coming.  After you say YES to the guy of your dreams, you’ll have the pleasure of listening to these questions over and over again.  Give it time, it’s only a matter of time.

The 7 Most Annoying Questions Asked After Announcing Your Engagement

  1. “When’s the Date”

You just got engaged .02 seconds ago, and SOMEONE is going to ask you when the big day will be.  Whether you decide on a date the day after or wait six months, you’ll hear this question every time you talk to someone new about your wedding.

The polite thing to do is smile and tell them the date (even if you told them for the millionth time) or explain that after finalizing the venue, you’ll be sure to let them know.  Just be prepared, this is going to be one of the popular annoying questions asked.  It’s not meant to be annoying, of course not.  But the more someone asks you, the more annoyed you’ll be.

  2. “I’m getting an invite, right? RIGHT?!”

You haven’t seen your tenth cousin twice removed on your grandmother’s father’s great aunt’s side since the last reunion – oh a decade ago!  But guess what?  That very distant relative will ask for an invite to the wedding.  You’ll react one or two ways.  Your jaw will drop to the ground in amazement, or you’ll laugh for the same reason.

There’s no right way to respond to a question like this.  You’ll need to decide if a white fib doesn’t hurt anyone, or if the truth is always the best medicine.

  3. “Are you SURE he’s the one?!”

You’re going to get this question even if the two of you have been together for a decade or one month.  People are often extremely pessimistic when it comes to marriage.  Most people wouldn’t dare bring up the “D” word to someone newly engaged, but when they ask you if you’re sure he’s the one, they’re thinking it.

The best way to respond to this annoying question is simply to say that “you’ve had plenty of time to think this over, and you’re certain he’s the one.  I would keep this answer short and sweet.  It gives less room for someone to interject more of their opinions.

  4. “But you’re so young?  Why are you in such a rush?”

It seems that anyone who’s under the age of 25 when they say yes gets asked this question.  If you’re under 20 and you’re recently engaged, you’ll certainly get asked this annoying question.  It seems that people think you’re wasting away your life when you get married in your early 20s.

The easiest was to respond to this to throw in the super cute and cheesy line – “love knows no age!”  There’s not too much you could say that would change someone’s opinion on you getting engaged at a younger age.  The sweet, sweet revenge comes years down the road when you’re still happily married.

  5. “You mean you’re wearing boots/TOMS/Converses instead of heels on your wedding day?!”

Girlfriend, raise your hand and give me a virtual high-five!  I rocked a pair of TOMS 99% of my wedding day.  I wore heels for my ceremony and in between all the happy thoughts I was having, I was disappointed I switched out my comfy flats for a pair of uncomfortable heels.

When asked this annoying question, tell them that your beautiful long gown will cover your shoes.  Besides, you want to be able to dance the night away without having to worry about blisters the next morning!

  6. “Why such a long/short engagement?”

Are you catching onto a trend yet?  People think they need to know every little detail and are entitled to their fair (or maybe not so beautiful) opinions.  There will be someone during your engagement who thinks the time span is either too long or too short.  Because well, some people just can’t be pleased.

When asked this question, an excellent response is that it’s the perfect amount of time for your to plan your dream wedding.

  7. “I’m part of the wedding party, right?!!!!!”

I’m going to be straight forward here with you.  When I asked Brides what annoying questions they were asked during their engagement, this one threw me for a loop!  I was (and still am) absolutely amazed that someone asked if they were going to be part of the wedding party.  There’s one exception to this rude question – it’s your sister or best friend.  Otherwise, I would surely hope that this question is never asked of Brides again.  How AWKWARD for the Bride to have to answer this.

If you are in fact ever asked this, the best way to respond is that either A: “Thank you for asking!  I haven’t finalized the Bridal Party yet!” Or B: “Thank you for asking.  I’ve already asked everyone in our bridal party.  I’m sorry I didn’t realize you wanted to be a part of the party!”

Can you think of other annoying questions people asked you?  I’m sure there’s too many out there!  Leave your annoying questions in the comments!
